The action takes place in Poland in 1943 in a forest called Bialowieza Forest, when a Jewish family is trying to escape the Nazis. Like in the fairytale, the family members are the father, the stepmother, and 2 kids: a boy and a girl. With the enemy close on their heels, they drive through a forest on a stolen motorbike. The stepmother decides that leaving the kids behind is the only way to give them all a chance of survival, and so it is done, even if the father does not agree. The children are abandoned in the woods and are told to forget their Jewish names, and to call themselves instead Hansel and Gretel, so nobody can make the connection. The two kids are searching the forest to find food and shelter and make their way to a cottage, where an old woman lives alone. Of course they later find out that the old woman is in fact a witch.
Practically the book has a lot of the elements that we can also find in the fairytale from which is inspired: the breadcrumbs, the witch’s cottage, the cage, the big oven, but can’t be really considered a fairytale like the original version. It has a more darker and impressive story, and has more realism added to it because of the place, the moment, and the reasons for which all the action takes place. Here we are not only talking about 2 kids that get lost in the forest and arrive to a witch house, but we also have a different part of the story about a Polish village, about German occupation, and about how ordinary people deal with it; it’s also the story of a group of Partisans who also happen to live in the forest and what they do to fight back-and at what cost; it’s about cultural identity and memory and fear. It’s a book that explores different sides of World-War2.
So you can see that definitely it’s not a story for children or fairytale for 7 yr old. It is a story book for bigger kids, and especially for grownups. The book has all the elements that a quality novel should have, so it’s a big mistake to think that the original story of Hansel and Gretel and this book are designated for same age category.
